Rating is 5.0 out of five stars based on 4 reviews

Discover the distinction of DSC® Inox Stainless Damascus Steel, the ultimate choice for knife and jewelry artisans who seek top-tier materials for their masterpieces. Our meticulously hand-forged stainless Damascus steel comes in a mesmerizing array of patterns: ladder (band), wave (herringbone), ferus, raindrop (small roses), large pyramids, leopard, twist (torsion), and random (wild).

DSC® Inox is skillfully crafted through a unique weld bonding process, eradicating contaminants and welding seams, which results in a pristine steel composition. This high-quality composite steel is forged without the use of powder, focusing on traditional solid material methods that minimize distortion during heat treatment. The steel layers remain firmly welded together during additional hot working or machining, ensuring a robust and stable blade.

With an impressive hardness of up to 62 HRC and superb ductility, DSC® Inox offers remarkable cutting performance and longevity for your custom knife blades. Our 120-layer billets are delivered soft-annealed, un-etched, and precision flat-ground, guaranteeing top performance and seamless customization. There are over 50 dimensions available, including round, square, and flat stock.

  • Hardening / Tempering / Annealing

    Hot Working:

For forging our stainless Damascus steel, the recommended temperature is 1742-1922°F.

    Cold Working:

Cold working is typically not recommended for our damascus steel.

    Machining:

All of our products are delivered in a soft annealed state, with a hardness of 22-27 HRC.

    Soft Annealing

To process our DSC inox after hot working, you need to perform a soft annealing process as follows:

    • Heat it in the oven up to 1526°F
    • Holding time of a minimum of 4 hours at 1526°F
    • Slowly cool in the furnace
    • Remove at temperatures of < 752°F

    Hardening Information

Deep freezing after hardening is not required but recommended. Only when the steel has been hardened is the maximum corrosion resistance achieved. We recommend the hardening process according to the following instructions in a vacuum, or to be carried out under protective gas:

    • Heat it in the oven up to 1922-1976°F
    • Holding time for 15-20 minutes at 1922-1976°F
    • Rapidly quench in air, then immediately deep freeze

    Tempering Information

Tempering after the hardening process is needed to convert the steel structure into tempered martensite and to adjust its hardness. We recommend a tempering of at least 2 x 1 hour, optionally repeating the deep freezing process before a second tempering.

    Knife blades:

    • 2 x 0.75 hours at 356-374°F (60-61 HRC)

    Decorative items:

    • 2 hours at 572°F (56-57 HRC)
  • Etching

Bring your hardened Damascus steel to a 400-grit finish and refine it up to 1200-grit, based on your preference. Avoid buffing the steel after sanding.

Wash the steel and dry it with a clean cloth. To achieve an even etch, remove any residue on the steel with denatured alcohol. Do not use acetone for cleaning purposes.

Please observe caution and wear protective gear while handling acid. For stainless steel, you can use either Muriatic, Hydrochloric (HCL), Nitric, or Sulfuric acid at a 15 -20% solution. Heat the solution to a temperature of 122°F (50°C) in a water bath.

It is advisable to carry out five or more shorter etches instead of fewer longer ones. Brushing is the most effective method for achieving an even etch. Use an old toothbrush to brush the steel in the acid solution with every etch.

After etching, neutralize the steel thoroughly using baking soda to prevent further corrosion.

For stainless steel, etching does not affect one of the layers within the steel. If desired, use high-grit finishing sandpaper (1200 to 2000 grit) to gently buff the top of the slightly raised steel, creating a dramatic contrast.
